Rotary Club of Gokarneshwor Leads Successful Tree Plantation Drive at Bagmati Corridor, Makalbari

Demonstrating a strong commitment to environmental conservation and sustainable community development, the Rotary Club of Gokarneshwor, in collaboration with the Rotaract Club of Gokarneshwor and with the valuable support of the Gaurishankar Women Group, Makalbari, successfully organized a Tree Plantation Program at the Bagmati Corridor, Makalbari, on Sunday, 26 July 2026.
The event was organized as part of Rotary International District 3292’s Plantation Week, encouraging Rotary clubs across the district to contribute to a greener and healthier environment. In line with the district’s environmental initiative, the program was conducted without the use of printed flex banners, reflecting Rotary’s commitment to reducing waste and promoting environmentally responsible practices.
More than 101 saplings were planted during the program. The plantation included a diverse selection of native and ornamental species such as:
- Jacaranda (Jacaranda mimosifolia)
- Camphor Tree (Cinnamomum camphora) – locally known as Kapur
- Champak / Golden Champa (Magnolia champaca) – locally known as Chaap
- Kalki (local name; English common name varies regionally)
- Juniper
- Indian Bay Leaf (Cinnamomum tamala) – locally known as Tejpatta
- Night-flowering Jasmine (Nyctanthes arbor-tristis) – locally known as Parijat
Beyond planting new saplings, participants also carried out maintenance work on trees planted during the previous year. This included pruning, clearing overgrown grass, and removing plastic waste and other litter from the plantation site. These efforts reinforced the message that protecting the environment involves not only planting trees but also caring for them throughout their growth.
The Rotary Club of Gokarneshwor expresses its sincere gratitude to Green Valley Green Nepal for generously providing the saplings that made this plantation drive possible. The club also extends special appreciation to Rtn. Bhuban Shrestha, Chair, Environment Committee, Rotary International District 3292, for his leadership, encouragement, and continued dedication to promoting environmental conservation throughout the district.
The active participation of Rotarians, Rotaractors, members of the Gaurishankar Women Group, Makalbari, local residents, and volunteers transformed the event into a true community effort. Their collective enthusiasm and teamwork reflected Rotary’s enduring spirit of service above self.
Speaking on the occasion, club leaders emphasized that every tree planted today represents an investment in cleaner air, healthier ecosystems, increased biodiversity, and a greener future for generations to come. They also encouraged the local community to take collective responsibility for protecting and nurturing the newly planted saplings to ensure their long-term survival.
This successful Tree Plantation Program is another example of the Rotary Club of Gokarneshwor’s dedication to community service, environmental stewardship, and sustainable development. Through meaningful partnerships and volunteer action, the club continues to create lasting impact within the community.
